Little Shop of Horrors was the first show performed in the New Empire Theatre, in October 1998. Applause Theatre Company were so concerned the theatre might not be ready that they came down weeks before and helped with the installation of the new seating. They performed to packed houses, and even opened up for an open dress rehearsal, so that the public could see how a dress rehearsal runs. |

Kenny Baker appeared live at the Empire in the spring of 1999, with the Jon Bennett Big Band. Sadly it was his last live performance as he passed away the following winter. |

The Mikado, presented by the South Anglia Savoy Players, was a superb opera performed one day mid-August 1999. We remember it well, as it was the same day as the total eclipse of the sun, and cast and crew could be seen out on the street peering at it through welder's masks - we even got a mention on the radio! |
