Dan's Workshops

I love my workshops. At home I have two 'official' workshops, not including the kitchen, lounge and bedroom, oh and toilet (which doubles up as a darkroom!). At the theatre, I have a workshop within the control room for my electronic projects and repairs, and for large scale work I use either the main stage downstairs or the stage in the Theatre Upstairs. When building the West Side Story set I converted the Theatre Upstairs into a wood workshop, and when installing the flying system downstairs, I utilised the steel deck rostra in making a workshop, complete with pillar drill and compressor.

The picture above is of one of my workshops, where I built my lighting desk, a project which took 10 months. The drawers which span the walls of the workshop contain thousands of components, all categorised from resistors through capacitors to semi-conductors. There are about 1200 drawers, and below the benches a further 100 bins for larger bits. I know exactly what is in each of them!

I also have an extensive collection of electronics test equipment including oscillasopes, frequency counters, signal generators, logic analysers and lots more.

The latest addition to my extensive tool collection is my Warco Vertical Mill, which my dad bought for me in 1998, at a cost of £3,000. This Mill has had quite an input in the construction of components for the flying system and more recently for constructing the gear boxes and mechanics for my moving lights. The Mill was originally bought so that I could skim my own cylinder blocks, cylinder heads and mill out my valve seats for my modified A series engines. (see Mini page).

My Boxford Lathe, pictured right, has done a lot of work since I bought it in 1989. One of my most valuable and versatile tools. Since purchasing it, I have added hundreds of drill bits, cutting tools, reamers, collett sets, knurling tools and thread cutting gear sets from numerous boot fair expeditions.
