A New Challenge For All

Following La Cage aux Folles, Julie once again took to the director's chair for West Side Story, a favourite of hers and her family and one she has always wanted to do. Her dad, Doug Robertson, played the part of Tony in his youth, and our usual choregrapher David Street had a hard act to follow as he took on the leading role, alongside former Cagelles James Brett and Stuart Duff as Riff and Bernado.

The scenery was designed by Danny, utilising the back wall of the theatre to create a realistic street scene. He was assisted by Doug, Julie, Hannah, Dave Perham and Trudi in the building and painting of the set, which was made up of trucks, frenchmen and revolving scenery. The task of painting all the brickwork was monumental, and Trudi was still painting the set on the first day of the show. Danny welded together a real balcony and made a real chainlink fence with scaffolding which flew in from above.

West Side Story was a difficult show on many levels, with difficult music and a demanding score which the Players had to negotiate, many of whom are not 'singers'. David Street, playing the lead Tony, had never sung on stage before (though many times in the bathroom!), and although used to performing as a dancer in front of audiences, had never sung 'publically'. He surprised many with his performance, as did Stuart and James.

West Side Story was a great success, and was praised far and wide for it's incredible set, chorus, costumes and for the principle roles as well.
